The 30-Day song Challenge. . . and its problems

Ok, so I actually sometimes like some of the songs my Facebook friends are posting, and it’s interesting to see what they associate with music.  BUT, some of the “subjects” for the day’s song are so generic, it’s as if someone with absolutely no imagination nor life/music experiences came up with the list (like, oh hey,  a pre-teen?!).   Anyways, here goes my shot, all in one day, to fill in the blanks on this so-called challenge, and why some of the “subjects” are so BAD:

Day 1 – Your Favorite Song.  Ok, well I have at least 100 “favorite songs” and they change from day-to-day. For this week, I’d say “Pride” by SitD – overall, probably “Bohemain Rhapsody” by Queen, or “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin.  Or maybe “Freewill” by Rush? I could go on for days here…

Day 2 – Your Least Favorite Song.  Do you mean in my collection? Or just in general? I mean, just as a general rule I hate Country and Urban Country (Rap). Plus theres a ton of Pop that got played to death that’s just wretched.  If I had to pick just one, that got quite a bit of play-time, but mercifully is NOT in my collection I’d have to go with “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” by PM Dawn, which totally ruined an amazing song by Spandau Ballet, “True”)

Day 3 – A Song That Makes You Happy.  Hmmm, there’s a ton in my collection that do that. Just about anything by the B-52s, Weird Al, or Pansy Division will make me laugh. Plus a bunch of just Pop/Dance songs that I enjoy singing along with also make me happy.  A few that fit the category that jump instantly to mind would be “Cocksucker Club” by Pansy Division, “Song for a Future Generation” by the B52s, or Madonna’s “Express Yourself.”

Day 4 – A Song that Makes You Sad.  Hmmm, again there are quite a few of these, in fact I have a whole collection named “Sad Songs.” But this one almost always brings a tear to my eye, “Sally’s Pigeons” by Cyndi Lauper.  And this one too, “Hideaway” by Erasure.

Day 5 – A Song that Reminds You of Someone.  Um, just someone? No one in particular?  Jeebus; I have whole collections of music that are dedicated to various people I’ve known through the years. “Lovesong” by The Cure reminds me of my first love. “Interstate Love Song” by STP reminds me of another relationship, and the whole album “The Sensual World” by Kate Bush reminds of yet another (we often went to sleep to this album), I’ll just pick “Love & Anger” by Kate Bush, since that one ended poorly.

Day 6 – A Song that Reminds You of Somewhere. Oh my god, can you be more vague?!  Probably at least 50 I can think of. God, who wrote this list?  Obviously someone who hasn’t yet begun to experience life.  I can probably associate nearly every song in my collection with somewhere, and that’s something over 8,000 titles. But there are some that pop to mind, like listening to Enya while stargazing in the mountains, or When in Rome while driving to Vegas many years ago, or Sheryl Crow when I was moving from California to New Mexico.  So I guess I’ll just pick one from each of those artists; “Storms in Africa” by Enya, “The Promise” by When in Rome, and  “All I Wanna Do” by Sheryl Crow.

Day 7 – A Song that Reminds You of a Certain Event.  Didn’t you just ask that? Oh, that was place – well most places are remembered due to events. Oh well, let’s see. Two of the biggest were when I was moving, like I said before – Sheryl Crow when I moved from CA to NM.  But another big one was when a buddy bought me Weird Al’s “Running With Scissors” album when I moved from Phoenix back to Albuquerque. He told me not to look at the song list, and a ways down the road on comes “Albuquerque” – I laughed my ass off!  (I also laughed pretty hard when the “Truck Drivin’ Song” came on, since I was driving a truck…)

Day 8 – A Song that You Know All the Words to.  Holy Jesus, only a few hundred! Can we be a little more specific please?  Ugh.  Just about everything by Madonna, the B52s, the Cars, Queen, BoC, AC/DC, Aerosmith, STP, Garbage, Rush, The Who, Depeche Mode, Erasure, basically anything from the 70s to the end of the 90s. Well, not anything, but A LOT! How about Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, or Happy Birthday? So, I’ll just fire up the jukebox and list the first song that comes on that I can sing to… And we get something most people have probably never heard before, but I think she’s AWESOME, and I love to sing this tune! “The Id Parade” by Danielle Dax – sweet!

Day 9 – A Song that You Can Dance To.  So how inane can these subjects be?  I can dance to probably well over 5,000 of the 8,000 songs in my collection!  How about the first song I ever danced to at a wedding?  Or the first song I danced to at a gay bar?  Or the first song that I danced to at a prom/school dance?  “I Touch Myself” by DiVinyls was one of the first songs I danced to at a gay bar (actually the first one was “Express Yourself” by Madonna, but I was dancing with my sister, so that doesn’t count, LOL) . Oh, and the first song I danced to at a wedding was “Gonna Make You Sweat” by C&C Music Factory (with the Bride no less!).   OH, and I know the words and sing to all of these songs – doh!

Day 10 – A Song that Makes You Fall Asleep.  Well, I already said me and  boyfriend at one time went to sleep to “The Sensual World” by Kate Bush, he usually also threw in the “Chess” soundtrack and some Bulgarian women’s choir too. I guess just about anything if I’m tired enough.  Now-a-days you’re more likely to hear Enya, Tangerine Dream, or Jarre coming from my speakers when I’m looking to relax.

Day 11 – A Song from Your Favorite Band.  Well I’ve got about 10 “favorite bands.”  Could you please buy a clue and get a little more specific?  Like maybe your favorite song from the last album you bought by a band whom you have 3 or more albums? Ok, now that I think I can answer; “Land of Canaan” by Therion from Sitra Ahra.

Day 12 – A Song from a Band You Hate.  Um, why would I even be familiar with any songs by a band that I hate? Or maybe you mean a song that I actually like by a band that I don’t particularly care for as a whole?  That I can probably answer. I never really liked that old 70s band “Chicago” but I did like “25 or 6 to 4”

Day 13 – A Song that is a Guilty Pleasure.  This was pretty easy actually.  “Nothin’ But a Good Time” by Poison.

Day 14 – A Song that No One Would Expect You to Love. Hey, didn’t I just answer that yesterday? Ok here’s another one (actually I think this whole album is AWESOME!) “Cherry, Cherry” by Niel Diamond “Hot August Night” (1972).  One of, if not the only album where it doesn’t sound like he’s singing through a hollow tin can. And he sounds like he could’ve been a kick-ass rocker. Alas it didn’t happen.

Day 15 – A song that Describes You.  Again, I have whole collections of songs that I feel describe me. One of them is over 3 hours long when played in total! (and it’s a requiem!) I’ll try to limit myself to just three; “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, because it’s the commensurate “coming out” song, “Behind Blue Eyes” by The Who because that’s how I often felt, and still do on occasion, and “Wherever I May Roam” by Metallica because I have roamed A LOT (moved my household across state lines 13 times since 1995 plus a few times to different apts. in the same town)

Day 16 – A Song You Used to Love But Now Hate.  Hate is a pretty strong word, but I really don’t care for this song anymore, and it’s the whole reason I bought the album in the first place;  “What I Am” by Edie Brickell. Ugh – I really don’t like this anymore.

Day 17 – A Song You Hear Often on the Radio. On the what?  I don’t listen to the radio, ever.  I don’t think I’ve even heard a radio in over 10 years. (no answer)

Day 18 – A Song You Wish You Heard on the Radio.  I could care less what gets played on the radio. (no answer)

Day 19 – A Song From Your Favorite Album. Hurm… I’ve got many, many “favorite” albums. Another dumb, non-specific question.  How about a favorite tune from the last album you bought for an artist whom you collect (6 or more albums). “Faithless” by Rush from Snakes & Arrows. (I *LOVE* this song!)

Day 20 – A Song You Listen to When You’re Angry.  I have whole collections of angry, venomous music, one collection is all Annie Lennox music, LOL. Not to mention groups like NIN, Marylin Manson, Metallica, Contagion, KMFDM, etc. Two of my favorites though are basically the whole NIN album “Pretty Hate Machine” (particularly “Head Like a Hole”) and “We Believe” by Contagion.

Day 21 – A Song that You Listen to when You’re Happy.  Hmm, again with the non-specifics.  Again(!) I have whole collections of “happy, bouncy” music.  Most of them have healthy doses of the B52s, OMD, Erasure, and other “dance hits” type music (C&C, 2Unlimited, etc.)  I’ll just flip through the jukebox and the first “happy, bouncy” song that comes on will be selected… “Chorus” by Erasure

Day 22 – A Song that you Listen to When You’re Sad.  Um didn’t I answer this way back on day 4? Oh, yup I did.  (No Answer – none deserved, apparently someone was getting bored trying to come up with this list)

Day 23 – A Song that You Want Played at Your Wedding.  Um, well since gays aren’t allowed to get married, we’ll go for vulgar instead. “User Friendly” by Marylin Manson whose lyrics pretty much describe the current so-called state of marriage anyways.

Day 24 – A Song that You Want Played at Your Funeral.  Didn’t I mention earlier that I have a 3-hour personal requiem?  Yes I did. But I think the last two songs (that have lyrics) in my requiem are just awesome – both are from Queen and they go so very well together; “Who Wants to Live Forever” and “The Show Must Go On” – I get goosebumps listening to these great and powerful songs.

Day 25 – A Song that Makes You Laugh. Um, hello?  I think you asked this way back on Day 3? Uh, yup!  (no Answer) Someone was getting REALLY bored making up this list…

Day 26 – A Song that You Can Play on an Instrument.  Finally! A precise question. “Miss Clare Remembers” by Enya.  It’s pretty simple and it sounds nice too!

Day 27 – A Song that You Wish You Could Play. Too many to mention, but I think it would be totally awesome to be able to play Bach’s “Toccata & Fugue in D Minor” on the organ.

Day 28 – A Song that Makes You Feel Guilty.  Humm. Dunno that any songs make me feel guilty, per se, although there are some sad, depressing, and nostalgic tunes out there. This one reminds me of a love that I let go once, and probably shouldn’t have.  He was HIV+ and I wasn’t, and I was young and naive. “Hello Earth” By Kate Bush. “…murderer of love… Why did I go? Why did I go?…”

Day 29 – A Song from Your Childhood.  Hmm, there are a ton.  My folks listed to a lot of records, and so did my older sister, so I’m not sure which I should choose from. I’ll pick one of my sister’s tunes; “One” by Three Dog Night. (from 1969, I was 3, but I remember her playing this album a lot, well into the 70s)

Day 30 – Your Favorite Song at This Time Last Year.  Hmm, I’m not sure.  I was in the middle of  a move from Arizona to Utah and I was buying a lot of Euro-Electro-Metal (SitD, VnV Nation, Crystal Method, Fluke, etc.)  I’ll probably have to go with “Darkangel” by VnV Nation, “…it seems I came to leave.”
