Growing For Profit

So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how and what to try and start growing on my Mom’s land this Summer in order to make some kind of profit.  I’m still undecided.  At first I was thinking of doing ornamental and bedding plants because they seem to always be in demand – along with grafts from the various fruit trees from the existing orchard.  But I don’t think the grafts would be ready for resale until next year, and the same probably goes for getting established as a … Continue reading

Slow Weekend…

As much as I hoped to make some real headway on the packing and other moving preparations, I didn’t get hardly anything done in that arena.  I ended up reading a couple of books instead, and playing a bit of Warhammer here and there.  The books were most excellent, however. The first was a very short, but engrossing book on web “psychology,” for want of a better explanation. Neuro Web Design: What Makes Them Click?  relates many different psychological studies and how their conclusions relate to web design, and what … Continue reading

Disconcerting

So I find it really odd how uncomfortable I am with empty bookcases.  Suddenly I feel like I need to look stuff up and dig into my boxes of books to find something in particular, even though I’ve never noticed feeling that way over the past year or so! The worst part is knowing that most of my books are probably going to be in storage for the better part of 6-months or so until I find another job & place to live outside … Continue reading

I Got A-Lotta Books!

Packing up in preparation to move – again – has once again shown me how many books I have.  I could practically open up my own library!  And maybe someday I will have a house where I can actually have a study/library.  That would be a dream come true, to be honest. Most of my books fall into just a few categories (biggest collections first): Philosophy Technical reference: System Admin/Web Admin/Programming Writing reference Gardening reference Egypt Game Theory Business Management Literature I’ve boxed up about three bookcases full so far … Continue reading

New Career – Farmer?

And not even a Gold Farmer, LOL.  With the distinct possibility that I won’t be able to find a decent IT job anytime soon, the prospect of moving up to my Mom’s farm is looking not only interesting, but even attractive.  I’ve always wanted to start up a garden nursery, and with her land, which includes irrigation rights (basically the water is “free” due to the property taxes levied in that rural area). Currently there’s just a small orchard on the property, leaving appx. a full acre that is absolutely vacant … Continue reading
